Thursday Night Motocross at Portland International Raceway is one of the most remarkable institutions in American motocross, the longest continuously running nighttime motocross series in the country, going strong since 1966. That's almost 60 years of weekly Thursday night racing on the same hallowed PIR infield, from April through September every single summer. Around 200 racers show up every Thursday, ranging from pee-wees through full pros, paying $10 (adults) or $5 (kids 6-12) for a chance to race under the PIR lights starting at 6pm with practice at 5pm. The track itself uses the Portland International Raceway infield, a specially-built MX layout with soft dirt and notably steep hills that take advantage of natural elevation, lit for night racing, with concessions and the kind of authentic local race-night atmosphere you can't manufacture. For Pacific Northwest riders, Thursday Night MX is more than a track, it's a weekly community ritual that's been the entry point for generations of Oregon and Washington racers, the place where careers start and where families gather all summer. Located on PIR's grounds in north Portland, easy access from I-5 and I-405, just minutes from downtown. If you're a motocross rider in the PNW and you've never raced under the PIR lights on a summer Thursday night, you're missing one of the genuinely special experiences in American motorsports. The pricing is unmatched, the tradition is unmatched, and the lighting on a clear summer night with Mount Hood visible in the distance is unmatched. April through September, Thursdays at 6.
